International trade expanded rapidly when coal-fed steam engines were built for the railways and steamships. Until the late nineteenth-century coal was mined underground using a pick and shovel, and children were often employed underground in dangerous conditions. Coal-cutting machines were introduced in the 1880s. By 1912, surface mining was conducted with steam shovels designed for coal mining. Mineworkers used rodents (mostly mice) and birds (canaries) underground to track the amount of concentrated carbon monoxide in the shafts. Small animals were more sensitive to danger. Miners kept an eye on mice, and any strange behaviors, such as becoming lethargic or, on the contrary, making their way out of the shaft at the top speed, were a sign of coming troubles.
