Extracting of Copper from Other Ores. Copper can be extracted from non-sulfide ores by a different process involving three separate stages: Reaction of the ore (over quite a long time and on a huge scale) with a dilute acid such as dilute sulfuric acid to produce a very dilute copper(II) sulfate solution.

Copper extraction refers to the methods used to obtain copper from its ores. The conversion of copper consists of a series of physical and electrochemical processes. Methods have evolved and vary with country depending on the ore source, local environmental regulations, and other factors. As in all mining operations, the ore must usually be beneficiated (concentrated). The processing techniques depend on the nature of the ore. If the ore is primarily sulfide copper minerals (such as chalcopyrite), the ore is crushed and ground to liberate the valuable minerals from the waste ('gangue') minerals. It is then concentrated using mineral flotation. The concentrate is typically then sold to distant smelters, although some large mines have smelters located nearby. Such colocation of mines and smelters was more typical in the 19th and early 20th centuries, when smaller smelters could be economic. The sulfide concentrates are typically smelted in such furnaces as the Outokumpu or Inco flash furnace or the ISASMELT furnace to produce matte, which must be converted and refined to produce anode copper. Finally, the final refining process is electrolysis. For economic and environmental reasons, many of the byproducts of extraction are reclaimed. Sulfur dioxide gas, for example, is captured and turned into sulfuric acid — which can then be used in the extraction process or sold for such purposes as fertiliser manufacture. Oxidised copper ores can be treated by hydrometallurgical extraction.

Education Resources Copper Mining and Extraction: Sulfide Ores It’s hard to imagine a world without copper. We rely on copper for power, lighting, heating, communications, water supply and transport.

Copper Mining: The commonest ore used in the extraction of copper is Chalcopyrite (CuFeS 2) also known as Copper Pyrites and other such sulfides. The percentage of copper in the actual ore is too low for direct extraction of copper to be viable.

The principal ore of copper is copper pyrite and copper is extracted from this ore. The different steps in extraction of copper are: Crushing and Concentration: The ore obtained from mines are broken down into small piece by jaw crusher and then pulverized. The ore being sulphide ore is concentrated by froth floatation process.

Copper oxides are more abundant near the surface, but are considered low-grade ore, with a lower concentration of copper. Although this requires more ore to be extracted and processed, this process is less expensive, so oxides can still be mined at a profit. On the other hand, while copper sulfide ores are less abundant, they contain higher

EXTRACTION OF COPPER FROM SULPHIDE ORE Large amount of copper are obtained from copper pyrite (CuFeS2) by smelting. Ores containing 4% or more copper are treated by smelting process. Very poor ores are treated by hydro-metallurgical process. EXTRACTION OF COPPER BY SMELTING PROCESS Following steps are involved in the extraction of copper

The barren rock, or gangue has to be separated from the sulfide minerals in order to smelt the metallic copper from the ore. By far the greatest proportion of copper is extracted from the sulfides of copper, iron and sometimes other metals. Such ores originate from sulfur-bearing volcanic magmas, which have separated into metal sulfides and siliceous melts.

Copper Ores. An ore is a rock containing enough valuable mineral to make it worth extracting. In the case of copper, it is worth extracting when there is about 2 kg of copper per 1,000 kg of ore (0.2%). Copper minerals are found in over one hundred varieties, although only a few have been worked for copper on a large scale.

Extraction of Metals. Extraction of Copper.. Copper is sometimes found as native metal.. Copper ores include copper(II) oxide and copper(II) sulfide. Copper(II) oxide can be reduced by reaction with carbon.. Some copper ores may contain only small amounts of copper. These are called low grade ores and have less than 1% copper but they are still used because copper is so valuable.

Large amount of copper are obtained from copper pyrite (CuFeS2) by smelting. Ores containing 4% or more copper are treated by smelting process. Very poor ores are treated by hydro-metallurgical process. For latest information, free computer courses and high impact notes visit : citycollegiate

The Gibbs free energy of formation (Δ f G) of Cu 2 S is less than that of H 2 S and CS 2.Therefore, H 2 and C cannot reduce Cu 2 S to Cu.. On the other hand, the Gibbs free energy of formation of Cu 2 O is greater than that of CO. Hence, C can reduce Cu 2 O to Cu.. C (s) +Cu 2 O (s) → 2Cu (s) + CO (g). Hence, the extraction of copper from its pyrite ore is difficult than from its oxide ore

than carbon, it can be extracted from its compounds by heating with carbon. Copper is an example of this. Copper mostly occurs as sulfide ores, which are heated in air to convert them to copper(II

When reviewing Methods of Eliminating Copper from Gold Ores we see that several methods have been suggested to eliminate copper from ores prior to cyanidation. Preliminary extraction of the copper with sulphuric or sulphurous acids may be applicable to ores containing oxidized copper minerals such as malachite, azurite and chrysocolla but these acids have but little effect on sulphide copper

Sulphide ores such as chalcopyrite are converted to copper by a dissimilar method from silicate, carbonate or sulphate ores. The principal ore of copper is copper pyrite and copper is extracted from this ore. Extraction of copper from copper pyrites involves the following steps

A typical copper ore contains between 0.5% and 2.0% copper. A high grade ore produces a high yield of metal. A low grade order produces a low yield of metal. Copper can be extracted from sulfide ores (usually higher grade ores) by direct smelting. The earliest evidence of copper smelting occurs in Serbian artefacts dating from around 5000 BC.

Mexican copper ore is a mixed ore containing mainly copper oxide and some copper sulfide that responds well to flotation. The joint techniques of flotation and leaching were studied.

PREPARATION OF THE COPPER ORE. This study is limited in general to percolation leaching as it is the most widely used method to give proper contact of solvent with the ore to effect extraction of the copper. One of the important factors in percolation leaching is the size reduction necessary for copper recovery within reasonable time limits.

Purification of Copper by Electrolysis (extraction from ore above) The impure copper from a smelter is cast into a block to form the positive anode. The cathode is made of previously purified copper. These are dipped into an electrolyte of copper(II) sulphate solution.

Extraction and refining. The extraction of copper from ore is normally carried out in three major steps. The first step, mineral processing, is to liberate the copper minerals and remove waste constituents—such as alumina, limestone, pyrite, and silica—so that the copper minerals and other nonferrous minerals of value are concentrated into a product containing between 20 and 30 percent copper.
